Location of the place
Macau or Macao is a special administrative region of China on the western side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China. It is the most densely populated region in the world. It is surrounded by the South China Sea in the east and south, and neighbours the Guangdong city of Zhuhai to the west and north.
City
Macau was formerly a colony of the Portuguese Empire. The territory consists of Macau Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane. Population is around 667, 400 and area is around 32,9 km2.
Macau has a humid subtropical climate which is characteristic for southern China. The territory is dual season dominant – summer (May to September) and winter (November to February) are the longest seasons, while spring (March and April) and autumn (October) are relatively brief periods. The summer monsoon brings warm and humid air from the sea, with the most frequent rainfall occurring during the season. Typhoons also occur most often then, bringing significant spikes in rainfall. During the winter, northern winds from the continent bring dry air and much less rainfall.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Possible trips depends on your budget. It takes around 4 minutes by bus to Hong Kong. (no visa needed) Less than hour to Zhuhai. Zhuhai is the closest city in China Mainland and you need a visa. It costs around 20 euros. But some counties, especially UK and Poland pay more. Double and more.
Another possible trips are to Taiwan, Vietnam or Philli but there trips costs little bit more :D

Work description
This project aims to invent new tools to regenerate our skin with full structure and functions. In the past few yearrs, we have designed new molecules that can specifically activate certain sub-pipulation of immune cells and consequently trigger the self-healing mechanism of the tissue. We are now elucidating the cellular events and hope to accelerate the translation of our interesting findings in different wound models. The candidate will join a highly vibrant, young friendly and productive research team and develop carbohydrate-based therapeutics for skin regeneration. She should have a strong curiosity and passion to learn but there is no requirement on her previous experience.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
6400 MOP but actually i got 6570 and it was more than sufficient. It covered all my travellings around Macau, Hong Kong and also in China.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accomodation was provided by local IAESTE and it was covered by university so we didn´t pay anything. Campus was built 3 years ago so it is quite still new, but you have to be aware of insects.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE in Macau has only two members so noone was able to pick us up in Hong Kong but we had been provided by informations how to get to University so no problems :) They organised some events and we had really good relationship with them.
Meeting other foreign students
We were group of around 20 students from more than 10 countries and we were meeting everyday after work and we also did travel a lot. The best group ever!

Food, local specialties
Before internship, I was a fun of the chinese cuisine. Noone ever told me that chinese cuisine in Europe is soo different compare to the original. First few days were kind of difficult and i really recommend to take some pills for stomachache.
Local specialties ? Well. Let´s make you suprised :) You will have so much fun with it.

Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
During my stay, I didn´t need to contact IAESTE in Czech Republic. Everything was okay, but i know that there are available and if it is necessary they can help.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
I recommend to visit Zhuhai and Hong Kong for sure. If you will have a time, money and a lot of patience with visa, I would recommend to visit China Mainland, especially Gulin, Longsheng rice terraces, Yangshuo and nature around. It is unforgettable memory, which i will never forget. Also visit Macau city and have barbeque above the airport. It is soo peaceful place for evening- night meetings with friends.
What not to forget with you
Repelent. That´s the most important thing in Macau. :D
