Sorocaba is located in the southeastern region of the state of São Paulo and it takes 1,5 hours by bus from the capital state. São Paulo, state of southeastern Brazil, bordering on the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and bounded by the states of Minas Gerais (northeast), Rio de Janeiro (east), Paraná (southwest), and Mato Grosso do Sul (west). Sorocaba lies along the Sorocaba River, a tributary of the Tietê River. Given town status in 1661 and made the seat of a municipality in 1842, Sorocaba is now one of the country’s major industrial centres. he Sorocabana region has relatively low crimes rates for Brazilian standards, even in the largest city, Sorocaba. The south of the region is a poor area, which is not particularly dangerous to visitors, but it is wise to at least avoid displaying wealth and possessions there.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
In Sorocaba city you can visit the ZOO, parks or around Sorocaba there is a possibility of hiking in Floresta National de Ipanema. During weekends you can relax in Sao Paulo´s beaches too. Don´t forget Iguacu waterfalls ;)

Work description
Work with colleagues in field or laboratory activities related to Restoration Ecology and other similar topics. Work on LAP protocol. My final work was rewiev of my two months work.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
700 BRL/month

Language requirements
I didn´t speak in Portugese before this internship but when I arrived I try to learn something because in public places (supermarket, restaurant,..) it´s very usefull. Duo Lingo is good in beginning.
But I met a lot of brazilian friends who speak in English very well.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I lived in flat with two (brazilian) students near by university (5 mins from Uni). I lived in shared bedroom with one of them. University student office provided my accomodation.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE brazilian group works very well. One of this member picked me up at the airport and help me to get to Sorocaba (buy bus ticket and with the first orientation in Brazil). We had student meetings during weekends each month.
Meeting other foreign students
Before I arrived to Brazil I received an email with contacts of another IAESTE students who was with me in Brazil in the same time. We stood in touch with every interns who arrived to Sorocaba and had lunch together every day at Uni.
Sport and culture
swimming pool, electric bikes, gyms, running in the parks and dancing samba in the bars
Food, local specialties
Rice and beans every day and drinking caipirinha in the evening.
You can taste many kinds of exotic fruit for a good price. Be careful, they add sugar everywhere.
