Surroundings the location: So many possibilities. If you have more money you can hop on shinkansen and get basically anywhere. If not highway busses (night busses) are also a convenient option.
I will just name the places and you can find out yourself. At first something that is a bit further and is only worth it as a weekend getaway.

About employer: I worked at the Institute of Particle Technology at FAU. The labs were modern, safe and equipped with everything you need. I got to work with a lot of people there, which was super nice as I also got to know a lot about their research and culture (there are many international students).

Work description: I was working on asthma research. I had an opportunity to try also work with animal model (but I was not forced to) which was great. I used some common methods like PCR or western blot on daily basis, but I also learned some new methods as immunohistochemistry.

Local food specialties: I think as a Slovak, I knew Austrian cuisine quiet well. I wasn´t surprised by anything special.

Sport and culture: During our stay, we played basketball or football, went jogging in the morning (the only time the streets were empty) or went bouldering in Gammarth. Some people went to the nearby gym or played tennis. Mostly we went swimming in La Marsa.
Tunisian culture is different and I loved discovering the differences by living there. It is not possible to buy alcohol in most places (bars, restaurants, ...
